William W. Birdsall was born into the Society of Friends in Richmond, Indiana in 1854. Previously a high school teacher and principal, he became the fifth President of Swarthmore College in 1898. During his Presidency he accomplished a complete reorganization of the teaching staff, the installation of a new heating system, the building of a new gym for male students, and the introduction of a premedical course. Founded by members of Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia Yearly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Swarthmore College was incorporated in 1864 under a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The College opened in 1869 as an college and preparatory school, although the preparatory division was phased out in the 1880s.
